My Bedroom Makeover: From Cluttered to Chic

Chic Bedroom Makeover - From Cluttered Mess to Calm Sanctuary Reading Nook.jpg

The past three weeks were full of emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausting work. So much time, love, and effort went into my room makeover because it wasn’t just a visual transformation, but a huge decluttering project as well. I have literally never decluttered my room or belongings, so this was an exciting and equally draining experience. My intention behind each move and each new component was quite deliberate, planned out, and functional:

  • THE NEUTRAL/WARM WHITE WALLS will (obviously) lighten up my room, and perhaps consequently my overall mood. They will provide excellent fill light for taking photos too (adding to the overall lightness of the room). It’s great because the sunlight coming through my window now bounces off my closet mirror AND my walls.

  • THE READING NOOK is a longtime dream of mine that I had poorly attempted creating back in high school (with just an inset bookshelf). Though the furniture I purchased is a bit large/crammed for my built in inset-corner, I’m so happy with the way it all came together! The new bookshelf is smaller than my previous one but is actually the perfect size for all my books. I love the accent table because it’s a great size for a table and laptop desk (or even over the bed as a C table), is lightweight, and can even store a couple things. The new barrel chair is chic, comfy, and is suitable for long, seated work sessions with the addition of a small cushion. I’ll now be able to peacefully cozy up with a book in the comfort of my own room without looking up to see a messy room!

  • THE CUBICLE DRESSER is deliberately smaller than my previous dresser and is my attempt to force myself to declutter and make sure what I keep, have, or get is what I need. Some things (such as my candle “collection”) could still be thrown out or downsized, but alas I and my room are a work in progress. I can now clearly see and access everything in my dresser and will thus use everything more often, God willing. The cubicle shelf does not have a solid backing, so I can now comfortably access the outlet on the wall behind it. This is awesome because now I have connected my hanging ceiling lamp (not hardwired) plugged into the outlet which is connected to the switch near my door. My Xbox One X can now sit in my cubicle “dresser” and be plugged into a power strip behind it, so I no longer have to plug it into the outlet by my bed and use a super long HDMI cord to connect it to the TV. As I said in the video, priorities!!

  • THE DESK that I will now use as a vanity will finally be used! I never used it as a desk because its depth is too small to comfortably/ergonomically fit a laptop and my arms, or even a notebook etc without turning onto my side. So using it to store my makeup and act as a vanity will be perfect! I went through all my makeup quickly and threw out old items like dried up liquid lipsticks or oxidized foundations etc., but I think I’ll need to do another pass through and really figure out what I will realistically/practically use and what I won’t. I just feel so awful throwing out things that I spent a lot of money on and cannot be of use to someone else (like used liquid lipsticks).

  • THE HIJAB RACK/LADDER is an awesome way for me to fill up some negative wall space with something functional and pretty! Like most people, I have a handful of favorite clothing items including my hijabs (headscarves), so the ladder is an affordable and stylish way of keeping my favorite hijabs accessible and neat.

  • THE CURTAINS are a new addition to my room as well. I never saw a need for them and still don’t need them. But in addition to adding a beautiful pop of color (like an accent wall without the commitment), they actually block out a great amount of light and even dampen some sound from outside (I live near a freeway). I’m joyfully impressed at their “blackout” feature and have been finally sleeping well (though my memory foam pillows and the overall cleanliness of my room may also have something to do with that).

I’m not completely finished with my “room makeover” or transformation project, but I’m very happy with how everything turned out! I’m looking forward to sharing more home/decor/interior content on my YouTube channel and here on my blog. Let me know in the comments below if there is anything in particular you’d like to see me talk about/share! There are many aspects to this room transformation that I didn’t actually talk about in depth and would be happy to share (such as organization tips/ideas, DIY projects, and more).

Until next time,
Leena
